No, RBI won't withdraw Rs 2,000 notes! Don't believe forwarded messages on WhatsApp

A viral WhatsApp forward has people worried about a second wave of the unannounced demonetization in India. The message is forwarded by people on WhatsApp reads, “After 31st December 2019 you cannot change your Rs 2,000 notes.”

The message claims that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is withdrawing its highest cash denomination for the reissuing of Rs 1000 notes. The message also claims that Rs 1000 notes will be circulated in Indian markets from January 1, 2020, reported The Indian Express.

The rumor had started back in October after an RTI report said that the RBI had stopped the printing of Rs 2000 notes. The rumor spread quickly on WhatsApp which led the Press Information Bureau to announce in December that the information was just a rumor and had no weight to it.

RBI confirmed the rumor as fake in a statement, it said, “These are all rumors. There has been no such notification (by the RBI). Please refer to the website for all communication.”

On December 11, the Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur also spoke on the issue in Rajya Sabha. He said that the government had no such plans.

The Samajwadi Party leader Vishambhar Prasad Nishad had asked Thakur if the government was planning to re-introduce Rs 1000 denomination note to replace Rs 2000 notes. Thakur answered saying, “This is the real worry (about demonetization) which has surfaced now. I think that you should not worry about it.”

On December 11, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur also informed Rajya Sabha that the government has no such plans. Samajwadi party Vishambhar Prasad Nishad asked whether the government is planning to re-introduce Rs 1000 denomination note to replace the Rs 2000 denomination note. “Black money has increased by the introduction of Rs 2000 denomination note. There is a misconception among people that you are going to introduce Rs 1000 denomination note again to replace Rs 2000 denomination note,” he asked.

In reply, Thakur said, “This is the real worry (about demonetization) which has surfaced now. I think that you should not worry about it.”

Thakur also told the House that objectives of demonetization was flushing out black money, eliminating fake currency notes, strikeout terror financing and Left-wing extremism, non-formal economy to a formal economy to expand the tax base and boost digitization.

The government had in November 2016 demonetized Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denominations notes.

Thakur, however, admitted that the currency in circulation has indeed increased in the three years since demonetization. As on November 4, 2016 was Rs 17,741.87 billion which has now increased to Rs 22,356.48 billion as of December 2, 2019.

The message first began doing rounds when an RTI application revealed in October that the RBI has stopped printing Rs 2,000 notes. This gave rise to wide-spread rumors that the government is planning to demonetize the currency.

बता दें, रानी मुखर्जी  [Rani Mukherjee] की यह फिल्म काफी विवाद के बीच रिलीज हुई है. 'मर्दानी 2 [Mardaani 2] को लेकर विवाद की शुरुआत फिल्म के ट्रेलर के रिलीज होने के बाद से हुई है. इसमें एक सीरियल रेपिस्ट और खूनी को दिखाया गया है जो शहर में कम उम्र की लड़कियों को अपने निशाने पर लाता है, ऐसा कहा गया है कि यह सच्ची घटना से प्रेरित है. रानी मुखर्जी (Rani Mukherjee) फिल्म में पुलिस अफसर शिवानी रॉय की अपनी भूमिका को दोहरा रही हैं, जो उस अपराधी को दो दिनों में पकड़ने की बात ठान लेती हैं.

As the UK goes to the polls in what is dubbed the “Brexit election,” some Remain voters are going the extra mile to make sure their vote has the maximum impact. Increasing numbers of people are choosing to swap their vote with someone from a different constituency, switching allegiances to unseat an undesirable candidate.

‘Vote swaps’ are particularly common in marginal constituencies, where only a small number of votes are required to swing the overall percentage in favor of a different party. Tactical voting – when voters pick a party or candidate other than their first choice in order to reduce the margin of the other most prominent candidate – is by no means uncommon, with a poll by BMG showing that one in four people plan to vote tactically. However, vote swaps are a newer phenomenon and have been propelled into the limelight by an increasingly loud anti-Brexit discourse.

“This was a direct response to people on the street coming up to us and talking about the issue,” said Pamela Armstrong, a committee member for the collective ‘Cheltenham for Europe,’ who founded a Facebook group for vote swaps along with her friend Nikki Robson. “At first, we thought it would just be about linking our own [local] constituencies and we were a little surprised, when we went life, to get requests from all over the United Kingdom. I even had one from Antarctica which was a huge surprise to us.”

Robson and Armstrong set up the The Facebook group in May 2019 to bring together voters whose the primary concern was remaining in the European Union, and initially, it had 156 supporters. That number has now grown to more than 7,000 members, with up to 50,000 engagements per month and a month-by-month reach of two million. Whilst Robson handled the business end of the process, matching voters and supporting them through the swaps, Armstrong handled publicity, advertising the group on Twitter.

Tactical voting is when someone backs a candidate they wouldn't normally support, to stop someone else winning.

This often occurs in a constituency where two parties are in a tight race and candidates from other parties sit far behind.

If a voter believes their candidate sits too far behind in the race to stand a a chance at winning they may choose to vote for their favorite of the two who are in with a chance.

In this general election, voting tactically could help MPs who share voters' views on Brexit win more seats.

A the survey found that of 1,500 voters questioned, 24 percent said they planned to vote tactically to keep out a candidate they dislike, the BBC reported.

That compares with 66 percent who said they would vote for their first preference - regardless of how likely they were to win.

Earlier, Hina Khan expressed her excitement about the video and told Mumbai Mirror, “I love Arijit’s voice and the entire concept of the song is so unique, it appealed to me as an actor. I will get to channel various moods within a short period.”

The makers also shared the first look of the song in which Hina and Priyank can be seen romancing at the picturesque location. In the poster, While Hina is dressed in a gorgeous blue and orange outfit, Priyank can be seen wearing a white shirt and black pants

Russia doping ban timeline: events leading to WADA decision.

The WADA has laid a four-year, ban on Russia from all global sporting events including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2022, Beijing Winter Olympics.

The World Anti-Doping Agency banned Russia’s national team after officials in Moscow were accused of fabricating evidence to cover up the use of banned substances by the country’s athletes. Individual athletes who comply with strict conditions will be allowed to compete under a neutral flag, while WADA ordered a ban on Russian government officials or representatives attending events.

February 2018: A team of 168 Russians competed as part of a neutral’ Olympic Athlete from Russia’ (OAR) team but two of them failed drug tests - medal-winning curler Alexander Krushelnitsky and bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva.

February 2018: Russia was reinstated by the IOC after the remaining tests of the country’s athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were all returned negative.

September 2018: WADA’s the executive committee voted to reinstate RUSADA before it had fulfilled the requirements laid out in a “Roadmap to Compliance”, which included giving access to the data stored at Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory.

January 2019: WADA extracted doping data from the discredited Moscow laboratory, including more than 2,0000 samples, three weeks after the deadline it had set Russia.

September 2019: WADA said historical data supplied by the country’s anti-doping authority contained “inconsistencies” and that RUSADA faced another suspension. The IAAF maintained its ban on Russia which was excluded from the world athletics championships in Doha.

November 2019: A WADA compliance committee recommended that Russia receive a four-year Olympic ban as part of a sanctions package to punish Moscow for having provided the an agency with doctored and incomplete laboratory data.
